I remember those early Christmas mornings, pretty much how it went.

The first house I can remember was a little two bedroom post-war project house. My dad’s folks would come to spend Christmas with us. Grandpa slept on a rollaway in our room and Grandma slept on the convertible sofa in living room.

My brother and I would wake up when it was still dark (probably about 5:30ish), creep out of our bedroom and sit on the floor at the end of the couch, hunkered down in front of the wall furnace and peering around the corner of the couch at the Christmas tree across the room all of maybe 15 feet away. So close and yet so far, especially to a near-sighted kid who didn’t know he needed glasses until was about 8.

If we were brave enough, we’d try to sneak past Grandma on the sofa to get close to tree and the presents under it, but not daring to touch any gifts, then we’d sneak back to our vigil at the end of the sofa, silently waiting for mom and dad to finally wake up.

    Good memories.
