One of my very few childhood memories is about coffee. My mother drank very sweet tea (milk and sugar). Dad drank coffee black and plain (strong!). I was maybe about 4 years old and I saw a cup on the table. Thinking it was mom’s tea, I took a sip and gagged. That was 67 years ago and I have never tasted coffee again.
We were only allowed coffee on Sunday mornings. Mom would sleep in. Dad would make coffee for everyone and we would read the comics section of the paper on the floor. After the coffee made us restless, all three of us boys would go into the bedroom and ask Mom if she wanted a cup of coffee.
“No.”
Dad would then make us pancakes cooked in the shaped of U.S. States. Funny though, he would never tell us which State until after the batter hit the griddle. Good times.
I was 3 and my sister was 6. My grandmother made it for us, but it was actually mostly milk and sugar with a slightly tan color. We felt so grown up. This was back in the mid 50s.
My mother always drank coffee with lots of cream (half & half) and sugar, but my father liked it black, so early on I “learned” that strong black coffee was what MEN drank! I liked my mother’s coffee and drank it some at least before I was 9 or 10, and through the years graduated to black, as I drink it now (I realized at some point that powdered creamer was absolutely disgusting!).
What really sticks in my mind was an occasion at my grandparents’ house, when I was 10. The adults were all having coffee after dinner. I wanted to make my own cup of instant and after putting the powder in the cup I asked my grandfather if it was a good amount. Being that it was obviously a bit too much, he said “That’s enough caffeine to kill you!”. He was teasing me of course, as he was wont to do, but I took it seriously enough to actually be a bit scared. But it never deterred me from liking coffee!
TO EVERYONE HERE I am duly impressed w/how many likely honest answers without side stories. And a lot of names I don’t usually see. Welcome, Sit and have a cup.. uh.. of.. coffee.

Any of you Adam at Home readers recall at what age you had your first cup of coffee? Hopefully not as young as Adam’s daughter.

Wonder where she gets her over-exaggerated sense of exaggeration.

Does Adam make his coffee with Arabicrack beans?
Susan00100 almost 3 years ago
It’s not that Adam LIKES coffee so much.
It’s just that he’s addicted, same as booze or opiates.

It’s an “acquired” taste. Nobody likes their first beer, liquor or coffee. It’s the results that count.
Don’t like it? Don’t drink it.

Age 6. I’d go ask the fishermen on the bank on my dad’s property. :)

The first sip by a child, unless it’s dressed up like a milkshake, would not be a good taste. Later on though, it becomes the elixir of life…..
