I think Hammie is stating a hypothesis, According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, an hypothesis is a tentative assumption made in order to draw out and test its logical or empirical consequences. A theory is a principle that has been formed as an attempt to explain things that have already been substantiated by data. Hammie has no data to back up his assumption… unless he discovers actual giant ice spiders.
