Bravery is often the result of preparation and circumstance. When I was at a military academy, they would read out the citations for heroism each month. It took a while to figure out that this was to impress us with how dangerous and often foolish such actions might seem.
I will never forget the award for a pilot who landed on an unprepared runway in an F-105, while under small arms and mortar attack, picked up his downed wingman and got them both home in a cockpit built for one.
You also have to understand an F-105 cost only a couple of million dollars but it took more than twice that to train a fighter pilot to fly one.
