Book reports kill any pleasure in reading.

    I speak from experience.

Many the book report that was written by reading the dust jacket. In fact, a couple times I copied that word for word. The teacher knew that a fifth or sixth grader wouldn’t write like that.

Actually using a pencil and paper to write the report…interesting!

When Broomie was in school, they had scrolls, not books. I guess at 1500 years and counting, her memory is failing.

When my grandfather was a child, his parents bought a 1910 edition of The Book of Knowledge, which contains precis of most classic works, written at a child’s level. I managed to gain a pretty good grasp of The Iliad, and most of Shakespeare’s plays reading those articles. Wrote some mighty fine reports, too. (Listen, I read it, didn’t I?)

For an autobiography just read the about the author section instead of buying the book.

Can’t name a single book I had to write a report. HATED doing everyone of them.

The guy who got the best grades in my English class told me he just read the Classic Comics versions for his book reports.

I feel like an over-achiever. I read the first chapter (some times even two), a middle chapter, then skimmed the last chapter to see who was still alive.

Book reports are probably the main reason that I don’t read “literature” these days. I never liked having to analyze whatever the author meant. I read for pleasure, mostly, and for current events/history.
