Real question. In France if we are outside the civilian networks range we can still call for help (and only for that) and our call will go through the military network. It means that on the equivalent of mount McNasty there would be a way to call for help. We can also call for help if we don’t have any credit left. Is it the same in the US or are you on your own once outside civilian network range or out of credit?
When I was involved with search and rescue I was taught early on to carry dog treats in my pocket for just that reason. …and, if you’re really hungry, you can nibble on the treats yourself. Many years after I stopped doing that stuff I found a baggy of dog treats in the top pocket of one of my old flight suits 8^)
The most important tools for survival go in pockets so they won’t be easily lost. The next most important bits go in the survival vest. And the nice to have stuff go in the pack.
