This strip was done for a friend whose little son was so afraid of the water that he had to have all the flotation devices available before he’d go into the pool. He had the inflated arm rings, a life jacket, and when he could, he’d squeeze into an inflatable “doughnut” as well. The funny thing is, this young man is now a deep sea diver who specializes in the inspection and maintenance of underwater structures. Posts, moorings, rigs and sea walls are all part of his underwater work—quite a change from the boy who was afraid of the water! Bourton has also become a clean sea advocate. He donates many hours of his time to finding and removing “ghost nets” from British Columbia’s coastal waterways. He and the others who are cleaning up our oceans and beaches are unsung heroes. The next generation is a great one!
The way I was taught to “swim” was I was pushed off a crowded swimming raft into about 20 feet of water when I was 4. I was-as the person who rescued me told my youngest sister about 5 years ago-actually drowning when she(the daughter of my parents employer) noticed I wasn’t where she had left me jumped in and pulled me out. I, thankfully, remember very little of that incident, other than opening my eyes and seeing the surface getting further and further away
Mamma needs to have April learn how to swim as she does not mind the water. My own mom never did that with us, she did not like water. She and neighbor went to a friend’s funeral whose died while diving in a pool.
Let us take a moment to appreciate the accuracy of the “aaaaahh-wheeshh” description of the sound a pedual* pool-pump makes (*not sure if this is a word, but I started with “manual” and extrapolated. Grammarians feel free to help me out here).
