When one looks through photo portraits taken in the late 19th and early 20th centuries one finds so many pictures of severe, downright unattractive, subjects. Most of those are women. Then, once in a while, one finds a picture like this one wherein the subject is appealing to look at, even beautiful. Why is that?

If this 1904 woman were to pay us a visit today, I suspect she would conclude (based on the typical modern woman’s underwear) that somewhere along the way, underwear had indeed been forbidden.
