A few more odd uses (from the Amer. Herit. Dict. 4th Ed.):

    A thwart in a boat.

A platform on which animals, especially dogs, are exhibited.

To show (dogs) in a bench show.

A level, narrow stretch of land interrupting a declivity.

A level elevation of land along a shore or coast, especially one marking a former shoreline.

    English, right?

The bench is also where basic scientific research happens (as opposed to applied research, which happens in the clinic or the real world).
