Not so! Look at any American’s passport, and you’ll see them smiling like it’s their birthday party. Look at the passport of anyone from any other country, and they look like they’re about to be shipped out to the nearest gulag.

By the way, they don’t allow smiling in U.S. passports anymore.

That’s pretty much true. Part of my job is taking passport photos and we are told to make sure that they don’t smile. It’s so they look like they will in the airport when they need to look at it after they have to waited in the security lines for hours. Most people aren’t smiling by that point.

Smiles are allowed provided teeth aren’t shown and the smile isn’t “big”.

It’s had to get a good eye-roll in a photo.

You don’t smile for a Government ID so it will match your Mug Shot if you’re ever arrested!

It always puzzles me when they show someone’s mug shot on the news and the suspect has a big smile on their face.

My police ID was done by the same photographer that took all the wanted pictures. Seriously we had some ugly hookers in Toronto

Interesting fact: passport photos cannot depict you smiling so much that you are showing your teeth. Or, more to government psyche, grimacing in anger so much that you are showing your teeth.

The reason is that governments use facial recognition software (just like Facebook). Smiling messes it up.
