Nowadays, people have such poor writing and grammatical skills, you would think having an excellent command of the language would be an asset to ANY company. I cringe when I hear grammatical mistakes even on TV in commercials!
Then those employers need to train their prospective hires. The college degree proves she can learn a course of study. This whole “college as job training” attitude needs to end right now, full stop. That is NOT what college is about.
At 23, I applied to the then Big-8 CPA firm, Ernst and Ernst. The partner in charge of hiring took me out to lunch for the interview and one of his questions completely threw me – “how did did you do in your English classes?”. He explained to me that he could always take an English major and teach them accounting but he couldn’t always take an accountant and teach them to write English well. He said most accountants were not very good with English and it showed in their audit write-ups.

Not true. Our daughter has a degree in creative writing and English. She is now in an excellent position in an insurance company. Very excellent.
