Alexander Gordon Laing really was the first the first European to reach Timbuktu. He arrived in August of 1826. He was killed (possibly strangled) on or about September 26, 1826 – shortly after he departed Timbuktu, some five weeks later. (info from Wikipedia)

IE won’t be forgotten for as long as we still have mission critical applications that only run on it, of which there are a depressing amount.

Given that Timbuktu isn’t all that remote, was a prominent city and center of learning, and had been a major trade route crossroads for centuries (at its peak in 1500, it was larger than most European cities and much wealthier), the first white European to reach it is pretty much along the lines of “The first American to reach Paris”.

Not to forget “Windows Explorer”, who changed his name to “File Explorer” for no particular reason.

The second one bears a close resemblance to Gen. George McClellan.

The number 2 pix is Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904); the guy who “found” Livingstone.
