We had a couple of our dogs ear tattooed, then came the advent of microchips. Now, the city is moving to have all animals microchipped and requiring a pet tag. I’m not sure it will help much in returning strays or recovering stolen animals, but it’s worth trying it out.
My first dog had been tattooed in her ear. When I got her she was three, and it had faded out (the vet said due to ear wax) – AND she hated having her ears messed with!
Microchips are far superior – they don’t fade, and insertion is far less traumatic. The only real issue is if the information isn’t kept up-to-date.
We had a retired racing Greyhound with tattooed ears. Our second rescue was injured as a puppy and never raced so the rescue we got her from microchipped her.

Tag your pet so they can be returned to you if they get lost. Microchips are also good.
