As a fan of Batman in comic books, I waited for months with great anticipation for the Adam West TV show to debut. I was crushed at the over-the-top, worse-than-juvenile silliness of it, not at all like the comic books, at least not to my juvenile mind. Maybe I should have realized even as a kid that it would have to be targeted to either less mature or more mature minds than the comic books were to get on TV in those days. They went in the opposite direction from what I would have chosen: what I’d been imagining was in some ways a lot closer to the Michael Keaton movies. I did grow to enjoy the Adam West version for what it, even though its silliness then went on to infect the comic books for years until it was overcompensated for by the overly, grotesquely grim approach that has dominated the comics ever since.
