And now our heroes are in it to win it. Which is probably impossible but hey they have a finacial backer and Brent’s logic is solid: if there really is a black lotus, that’s a giant chunk of money they get from selling it he gets a nice piece of. IF there isn’t, he’s clearly just as into stoping this scam as they are. This also proves Brett is apparently the most loaded of the extended group: as outlined in a previous arc, Charlotte’s family is upper middle class, Kat and Deans are about the same, Heart and Her mom while not starving or anything are in moderate shape, doing good enough to not be in any danger. So far out of the characters who are at all important in the kid cast, all 7 of them only Lee’s status is a question mark. As we saw in the pool party, Dana is loaded.
I still think this whole thing is a grift, with the older kids pocketing the younger kids’ entry fees and rigging the games to clean up on the side bets. The prize card, assuming it even actually exists and isn’t just a slabbed photocopy, will be “won” by one of the insiders and the scam begins again somewhere else. Ah, to be back in grade school again! Those were good times. I knew a girl who fixed a jumprope contest…

“In order to win that card, we’re gonna have to try—”
