I used to be very, very skinny. My ex’s female family members, most of whom were not even remotely thin, found my weight to be their concern. I took the insults and the ribbing and demanding to eat more for years until I lost my patience with it one day. One of them looked at me and said, “Oh, have you gained some weight?” (I had not.) I didn’t think first, I was just tired of it, and said, “Not as much as you have.” I had a little less trouble with them after that, but still was hassled. Thin people have to take the insults, and the insults can only go one way.
I used to work with two women who were grossly obese. One day they were talking about drug addicts, saying “Why don’t they just not take the drugs?” and things along that vein. I wanted to say, "Why don’t you just not overeat?’. But I restrained myself.
