In the 9/24 issue of the Tulsa World there is a fascinating editorial on abortion by a Amy Werbel who is apparently an historian who studied the 1873 Comstock Act and its aftermath. She calls it the nations first attempt to control, among other things, abortion. I had always thought the Comstock Act was about sending “obscenities” thru the mail. Named after its most ardent proponent, Anthony Comstock, a postal inspector and evangelical christian. I do not recall it having anything to do with abortion. Her essay states that the Act totally failed to alter peoples behavior. I perhaps falsely assumed that we learned that lesson with the abject failure of the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act. But then again I guess not due to Nixon’s 1971 War on Drugs, which has also proved to be an abject failure.

Will we ever learn? Or will we keep repeating the same mistake over and over? Laws designed to alter human behavior will not be obeyed. Like the nationwide 55mph speed limit, which was ignored by everyone, including the cops. Like the Feds still claiming that Marijuana is still illegal, despite the fact that some of the reddest of red states(Like Oklahoma) have passed laws legalizing it. If Congress would legalize it, they could tax it(which was the argument FDR used to get the states to repeal Prohibition)

IMPO the forced birth movement still fails to understand this basic fact, making laws that force people to change their behavior, will always fail. If only because it makes people want to try it. Before draconian drug laws were passed, fewer than 5% of Americans smoked pot or shot heroin. After Congress made them illegal, people were curious and wanted to try them. Which lead directly to the national War on Drugs. And confiscation laws which now make up a good portion of almost any cities budget. IMVPIO outlawing Abortion(cont)
