This invokes a joke about a baseball umpire who was infamous for his mean personality and this carried over to his family life such that he mistreated his young son. Eventually he saw the error of his ways and vowed to be nicer and more affectionate. So every night when he came home he would ask his son to come sit on his lap. But the kid refused each time.
So we see…. the son never sits on the brutish umpire.
