It’s the body heat. Cat’s are thermophilic. First it relaxes them and then they go to sleep.
The only bad part is if you wake up covered in dog saliva, which is not odor-free like cat saliva and requires an immediate whole-body grooming.
The Mittens seen licking the tender haunch of the filthy hound!?! Never! It must have been some other ridiculously fancy cat doing that. :D
