Medicare was added later, but the Republicans have been trying to get rid of medicare ever since it was first created, a creation which they tried unsuccessfully to stop. They’ve already partially succeeded — by the creation of the 401K concept, — but a direct repeal of Social Security has not (yet?) been successful.
BUT in order to succeed, not only would Congress have to pass laws to do so, but the President would have to sign such laws. Even if the anti-Social Security folks manage to get a majority in both houses of Congress, Biden will not sign such legislation, and there will not be a 2/3 majority in both houses of Congress to override him.
2024 could conceivably be a different situation, but I hope that it won’t be worse.
