Sounds like the earliest rally towel goes back to the ‘75 Steelers. For the NHL, the origin was when Vancouver Canucks head coach Roger Neilsen in an ’82 playoff game waved a white towel on a hockey stick in mock protest to the officiating (there’s a statue outside the arena commemorating that).
