Many registers today will allow you to insert your card before reaching the total and I frequently have already put my wallet away by the time the last grocery item is scanned.

I had one where the lady figured out that you have to pay and started digging in the purse like an archaeologist. Finally facing defeat she told her daughter to go to the car and get the checkbook!!! A gentleman with an overflowing cart after several attempts said he forgot his PIN!! They changed the $10 bills to peach colored and people at the self checkout couldn’t get them to accept the “phony” bills. Just a few personal experiences.
