Our dogs were smart. I would go thru the motion then hold the ball behind my back. they would look, then look back up at me with that look, “I’m not falling for that trick!”
As usual todays cartoon is just super , the first panel with Pauls throw and the " precious " Buckles speeding off for the snowball , then Pauls expression ( his eyes ) , and to say nothing about the way that Buckles is looking for the snowball is just super , thanks to David again : ) David you make my day great everyday : ) Thanks : )
We did this with Sherwood spaniel. The snow absorbing the snow balls kept him busy. When he was satisfied that he couldn’t suss it out, he’d look back at us to indicate he was ready for the next snowball to be thrown.
At least they aren’t trashing the house, but it’s not nice to fool a dog like that. Buckles wants to please Paul by returning the “ball,” and he can’t. Buckles really holds that family together.

That is mean. I always threw it right after I faked it, while the dogs were looking for it.

I play ball with my dog, I lay on the ball to hide it, but he smells it out I think and tries to get it!

Watch out Paul, Buckles can trick you too! Buckles is so cute to happily catch the snowball.

Good for Jill to call out Paul for his ruthlessness and to actually take Buckles’ side.

When Red tried this in “Red and Rover,” Rover just made a new snowball.

I would do that too! Fun to watch the dog gallop around and wear himself out.
