[nerd alert] In the original story, the object was a glowing diamond. The director didn’t like the glowing diamond, but couldn’t come up with a good replacement. He ordered story boards made, and as a ‘TBD’ the artists used a black rectangle. The rest is history.

I thought this was referencing the monolith that mysteriously showed up in the desert a couple of years ago — and then the memes showed up with the monolith EVERYWHERE.

I have never seen a restaurant with “stone soup” on the menu.
