At first I thought it was a buttcone also. However..

    1) If it’s a cone, it’s too loose at the back end — you can see shadow indicating the space between the cat’s back and the “cone.” In reality it would fall off as soon as the cat jumps off what it’s sitting on. Plus it’s too big for the cat to walk while wearing it.

    2) it has an odd curved lower edge. If it were a cone, a cartoonist would not make that mistake.

    3) it has no fasteners to indicate that it’s a cone.

    4) If this were a buttcone, then the cat is sitting on a stool or a backless chair. But the stereotypical cartoon image of a stool is a three-legged wooden one, not this metal, four-legged contraption. So if this is a stool, Bliss has chosen to draw a stool that looks exactly like the seat and legs of a mid-(20th)century modern chair.

So I conclude that this is an enormous cat sitting in a chair.

It’s a little known fact that Charles Eames’ cat influenced his work.

I refuse to use a cone on my dogs. I use a neck pillow, the kind that people take on airplanes. I found out they work well when I told my vet I was not putting a cone on a 15-year old deaf, nearly blind dog who just had bum surgery for a tumor. He said to go to the pet store and get a blow up plastic collar. I went to a human store and got a couple nice soft collars as her neck measured 15". She became very attached to one of them and after she was healed, she would sleep with her face in the pillow. I stayed home with her and she never once even tried to turn around and lick herself. I think she had too much arthritis. Or maybe enough pain pills. It all healed up fine and my dog had a new “friend.” I also had a smaller one, which my current, smaller dog, will sometimes put her head on to sleep. If she ever is in need of a cone, I will use that.

The cat (that is a cat, right?) in the comic is wearing a cone, it will stay in place because it is collar-sized, and is sitting on a chair that looks like a cone.

Some cats cannot be coned. They can slip out.
