And you get to look forward to the ‘wet sock weather’ of Spring. At least where I am.

Summer is two weeks of poor sledding.

I like February. Days are starting to get longer, and the skiing is generally good. December bums me out, so dark and typically coldest month. April can be nasty cold and wet and windy here. Good month to head south for a couple weeks.

I could use another couple of weeks this February. The only business client I still have, has been in the hospital ill. Her corporation taxes as due by Mar 15 and she has not yet mailed a list of her deposits, sales or checks for the year so I can put together her books.

I telephoned her about 2 weeks ago to makes sure she knew what to mail to me and found out that she was in the hospital (she is in her 80s and a child Holocaust survivor). I went to the IRS website and downloaded an extension form for her corporation. I then went to the NYS website and found out that I can get an extension for everything – individuals, regular corporations, partnerships, etc. except for what is called an “S” corporation, an extension for which is required to be filed online. (This is basically a cross between a partnership and regular corporation – shareholders report the income on their personal returns.) There is a minimum tax for it, same as all corporations have in NYS.

I telephoned NYS tax and left the speaker phone on hold for about an hour and got a very nice woman. I explained the situation – I cannot file her extension as I am not an officer and I do not have software to do as she is my only business client. She cannot file her extension online as she does NOT use a computer. I asked if we could get an extension form to file for her. Woman went away and came back with same having been okayed and she would mail the form. Unfortunately the ONLY place she could mail the form was to the business – where there is no one to get it and mail it to me!

I spoke to the client today by telephone and she happened to be at her place of business as she stopped in to finally pick up the mail – and the form was NOT there after 2 weeks. She is going to her house in another state for the rest of the winter to recuperate. I explained the problem to her.

Basically if she does not somehow get the form and have time to mail it me and for me to fill in and mail back to her, I will write a letter for her to sign with the information and mail with a check with a cover letter from me explaining the effort made to obtain the extension form for her. Worst that could happen is that she will be hit with penalties and interest and I will write back with all the details and her excellent record of filing/paying in the past and ask for a waiver of the penalty which should, hopefully be granted as all efforts have been made to file timely and correctly (sure interest will not be able to be waived, but will ask anyway).

I plan on calling NYS tax again tomorrow to find out what is going on their end – did they ever mail it?

Another couple of weeks in February this year would give more time to try to deal with this!
