Could this happen in people who have had the hemispheres of their brain disconnected? Half the brain falling asleep?
My arthritis keeps me shifting around all night, dreaming about how easy it used to be to sleep like a log until the alarm went off.

I have heard of people waking themselves up from their own snoring.
Dolphins and other cetaceans apparently do half-sleep with one hemisphere of the brain at a time.
