    They are rather an assortment, aren’t they? Still, if you look back far enough, most recognized breeds were created from dogs of no particular pedigree; their owners wanted a specific type of dog, usually to do a specific job, so they engaged in selective breeding to fix that type, then continued the process to refine it. Surprisingly, some breeds are really very new; the very first German Shepherd Dog (GSD) was born in 1895 – and he wasn’t a GSD when he was born! But he was a herding dog that had all of the traits the breed’s creator, Max von Stephanitz, wanted, so he bought the dog, declared him to be the very first GSD, and used him as the foundational sire for the breed.
