In my experience, and that of a few educators I know, it’s pretty common for kids to use the words “real” and “fake” to mean “alive” and “dead”, so this kind of discussion with objects like turtle shells (or turtles inside shells) actually happens a lot.

At the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut last fall, I witnessed an encounter between a snapping turtle in his tank, and a yorkie being carried by a woman. Neither of them quite knew what to make of the other. They kept staring and cocking their heads. The turtle was probably used to people, but the dog was a new experience.
Exquisite shifting “camera” angles show the half-dozen who are the Blisshaven cohort in each panel differently; shaded, marching into the Nature Center in panel 1; fully, lit, from their backs, in a half-circle around the turtle case in panel 2. and dimly limned from the turtles’ perspective in panel 3. Virtuoso artistry by Richard (not to mention the witty dialogue)!

I think these snarky turtles are friends of Mr. Danders.

Forget the turtles. Check out the hares, in the race to get the kids’ attention span.

It would be great for Miss Bliss if these kids each quietly lived in a big shell!

Gotta feel bad for the turtles. Not much of a life. Add a TV and you’ve got your average American (myself included!)

How cute! The turtles think they are at a Trump rally.

Oh, the indignity! Less entertaining than a sandy fountain and a wad of old gum!
Kids, you’ll never woo the turtles with mockery. They are a bit like Petey that way.

Turtle poking his head out of the shell…has a very different meaning at our house
