I swear I am really hating ChatGPT and other AI text generating software. It is replacing real authors at an alarming rate, not to mention term papers, even thesises.
I don’t worry about scientists developing Artificial Intelligence. We can’t even create Human Intelligence the old fashioned way. Just visit Twitter. Nuff Said.
Help me find the subtle A&J humor in today’s strip. Is it that Arlo talks a lot and Janis gives a four-word reply? Her side of the conversation would be easy to replicate?
you all have to remember that behind EVERY AI is a human being. With that human beings, likes, dislikes, and prejudices. Back when I was in grad school (15 years or so) I and my (Ethiopian) classmate were working on a simple machine learning program. We were trying to get children help in selecting books they would like. I could get the program to work. She could get the program to work. The problem came when trying to meld the two programs. Having grown up in the USA I was taught to value freedom of choice. That idea is hammered in to us from day dot. “Do you want the blue ball or the yellow cat?” “Do you want peanut butter or tuna salad?” You all need to vote for Mrs. Long’s 4th grade class representative. My Ethiopian partner thought I was crazy. “What do you mean, give the children a choice? The kids will take what is best for them.” The unstated part of her sentence, was an adult would choose and the adult programmer would know what is best for all children using the program. For her, all choices should be directed at elevating academic achievement. We are talking about early childhood education here. For me, the idea was for a child to find books that would interest them. Be it pretty pictures, or the feeding habits of seahorses. We could not meld these two very different idea. Remember, behind all AI are humans.

Last week China and Russia said they will use AI to destroy the U.S. . Judging from the government it won’t take much.

People don’t talk, they pull on their phones and stare at them for hours at a time.

If her reply is “I can see that” all week long then we already are seeing it.

This point of this strip isn’t about AI—it’s about the failure of many human beings to listen to what others say and respond appropriately.
