Actually, “flying” squirrels glide, and they can glide to the ground without getting hurt.
On the other hand, I did once see a non-“flying” squirrel fall from a tree. It then stood up and looked all around, as if to see whether anybody had seen that mistake.

If you have flying squirrels in the neighborhood, putting the bird feeder in an open space away from trees is a useless endeavor.
