I was listening to a bird expert on the radio recently, and he said woodpeckers often drum (or whatever it’s called) on metal objects during mating season because they are louder than wood — and the louder the drumming, the more attractive they are to a mate.
During mating season the boys will peck to make noise and attract a female It has become a thing that he who makes the loudest noise attracts the best female.
I hunt, and I put game cameras out. Usually I’ll leave them out all year just to see what kind of wildlife I’ll get pictures of. One time a woodpecker destroyed one of my cameras. I had hundreds of pics of it doing so. Thankfully I didn’t get any pics of a woodpeckerpecker. It wasn’t for lack of it trying though. I had some pretty… um… intimate photos of it
A few years ago, there was a Pileated Woodpecker that kept trying to drill into my metal chimney cap. If the makers of alarm clocks could duplicate that sound, nobody would ever oversleep because they didn’t hear the alarm.
I have one out front that started doing that to a 20 foot, ten-inch diameter pole out front a week ago. The pole supports our power line going to the house. He seems to be making progress.
Actually it’s normal behaviour for woodpeckers! By the racket they make, be it on wood or on metal, they are they are telling other males " This is my territory! " Sorry to be sooooo instructive!! :-)

Those transformers are filled with oil. If Bill breaks thru the casing he’ll have a gusher on his feathers.

I’m sitting here this morning reading this comic while a Downy woodpecker is drumming outside on a tree in our back yard.

There was one that faithfully worked on the transformer outside my bedroom window every morning. Talk about a headache!
