There are other places in the world were the plastic actually gets recycled and doesn’t end up in landfills. Just because the US recycling system sucks, doesn’t mean it’s true for the rest of the world.
That’s why bottle deposits should be extended to more products. Those containers are made of easily recycled materials, and most importantly, they are sorted by the return process.
After a lifetime of recycling, we’ve given up. The trash company doesn’t pick it up at the curb anymore and the recycling center is far away and staffed by not-nice people. Still feel guilty though.
We need to go back to charging deposit on the bottles and plastic jugs like in the old days when you paid 2 cents extra for a 10 cent bottle of pop, I always returned my bottles for the money. I think I’m showing my age, :)
Waste Management, the garbage people in my area, got the city council to require everyone to have 2 bins, one for recycle and the other for garbage, and we have to pay for both even if people don’t use both. And if you put garbage in the recycling you get your recycle privileges taken away.
Therefore, I put all my plastics, except for bags which is against their policy, in with the cans and papers. If they are going to put the plastics into landfills then WM must pay people to sort out the cans from the plastics and my recycling money is actually used instead of adding to WM profits.

Watch the John Oliver episode on plastics. Wish I could show it to my students, but he rightfully swears too much!

It’s just theater here in the states, like airport screening.

just another facet of our disposable society, cheaper and easier to build single use items than to build items that can be reused

R J, most of your species do not have running accounts with Hostess, they’re much more familiar with the human’s waste disposal systems.

Nice to see that Fry and Lewis don’t always toe the line.
