I moved my picnic table so they couldn’t jump from it, then bought a plastic ‘squirrel guard’ and installed it under the feeder… but they chewed through it. I replaced it with an aluminum pie pan, and that worked.
I finally spent money on a bird feeder that is squirrel proof. It’s awesome seeing the squirrels trying to get at the seed, because they can’t hold on to anything to get at it.
I pay tribute to the squirrels with a modified birdbath full of seed and corn. The feeder is squirrel proof too, their weight closes the feed holes. I only feed in winter, I want them to feed naturally in season and I don’t want visits from bears, thank you very much.
Sophie would pull the feeder out of the ground and chase the squirrel, with the feeder bumping along behind her. Hopefully, the concrete base on the feeder would slow her down enough that she wouldn’t catch him.
We soak our bird food in hot sauce or sprinkle in cayenne pepper – it doesn’t bother the birds and the squirrels, raccoons and deer don’t touch it – no fancy, expensive bird feeders to buy…

My golden would have chased the birds. She had as much fun going after the birds as she did chasing squirels.

I’ve given up on putting out feeders (except in winter). The squirrel around here can get around or destroy any deterrent I try. :P

BUT, at least they leave the hummingbird feeder alone!!! YAY! :D
