Will Henry, I don’t want to be a scold, but a lot of people aren’t aware this is potentially a deadly thing to do. Every year people get buried in sand hole collapses, and more than half of people buried by a collapse die. Maybe not a great idea to promote it.
If the hole at least partially survives the tide, then there might be fish left in it when the tide goes back out. Then Dinner Time for all creatures great and feathered.
I live in NH, which is very sandy (except for the granite, of course). When we were kids, my brother & I played in what we called “the sandy area,” which was just a big patch of sand off the driveway. Besides playing with our mismatched bunch of toys, we also dug a lot. Our crowning achievement was a big hole with a shelf to sit on. There’s a picture of me sitting in the hole and my brother on the surface, and you can just see my head and shoulders.
We buried a “dead” toy dinosaur in the deepest part, along with a “time capsule,” but it was just a note in a ziploc baggie, so I’m sure it’s illegible by now.

No Spud! I love the second panel with the sense of damp sand and the small, blue puddle of water at the bottom.

A wet Spud is NOT a good thing!

I’m surprised the water isn’t seeping in through the sand.

There can be a LOT of danger in a hole on the beach.

I’d stick to hiding in trees; people rarely look up!

After y’all depart your temporary environs, maybe a sand crab will adopt it.

I agree with that sitting thing…..

I am surprised that Spud is not concerned about the man-eating mollusk lurking just under the surface of that hole.

Sure the Ukrainian soldiers don’t call that activity fun. (We now return you to funny comments).

The seagull has a one track mind, but he doesn’t mind sitting in a hole (pun not intended).

This reminds me of the minifort I dug in the front yard…only to realize that I had excavated an anthill.
