I’ve never heard of catching fireflies with a net. When I was a kid we just caught them with our hands.

    1. You have to go out very early in the evening to be successful. By late evening, most of the fireflies are well up in the trees.

    2. Winter weather seems to have killed off most of the fireflies in my area this year. I’m seeing about 10% at the usual number. So maybe take a year off from catching them considering that’s often a fatal experience for them.

Growing up in Colorado and living in California means I never saw fireflies until I attended a friend’s wedding in Kentucky. It was fascinating.

Haven’t seen a firefly here this year. Saw maybe a dozen all of last summer.

Hard to believe, but I found just the other day that fireflies are beetles. Well, one learns something new every day if lucky, no matter how old one is.

I’ve always called them “lightening bugs”. When I was a child, I enjoyed catching a couple and keeping them in a glass jar.
