Many of those “new” islands used to be all pat of the same island. Rising sea levels have turned the higher grounds into separate islands. (No, I have no evidence of this, just suggesting a possibility.)

How big is something to constitute being designated an island?

I assume these islands have to be made of rock and can’t be floating debris tossed over board from cruise ships
