Mr. G., I wish I had saved my comic book collection from my pre-teen days. Sigh!!!

    “…uniquely American…”

Not at all. Many other countries have also have comics, both in “book” form and as serial “comic strips”, and they’re not just translations or copies of American versions. Asterix — originally French — is just one important example of the book form. And WuMo, here on GoComics, is Danish.

Unfortunately, there are those comic books that come across more as agitprop protest songs when their writers focus more on grinding a political axe than providing entertaining reading. I have seen my fair share of bad comic book artwork, but it has an entertaining story, while I’ve seen comic books with great artwork and a worthless story. I remember such artists such as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Dan Spiegel, John Buscema, and many others who were as varied in art styles as there are jazz styles. Who can also forget the MAD magazine artists of years gone by, Dave Berg, George Woodbridge, Mort Drucker, Paul Coker Jr., Al Jaffee, Jack Davis, Angelo Torres, Wally Wood, Bob Clarke, and last but not least Don Martin.

…and who can forget Zippy the Pin head, The fabulous fury Freak Bothers, or the adventures of Fat Freddie’s Cat?… “Keep on Truck’n” and “onward through the fog”…

I turned up some of the comics I bought way back when, when we cleaned out my late parents’s garage. The roaches and bugs and mold and dirt had gotten to them.

Thank God I kept my SF magazines and books…
