I like everything about today’s strip. Especially the artwork. Can’t recall an Olivia strip I liked more. Well done.

We’re far enough away from the sun that the lights rays we receive from it are for all practical purposes parallel; raising the hat would not make it cast a wider shadow.* Reflection and diffusion can cause a sun shadow to become indistinct around the edges as the intervening object recedes (technical term: penumbra), but an airplane will cast an airplane-sized shadow on the ground regardless of its altitude.

The effect shown here indicates suggests light source at the point where the two lines indicating the edges of the shadows meet, about two feet above the hat (where the <drawing of the sun is, but not the actual sun). Chalk it up to cartoon physics, I guess…

*When the sun is low you may of course cast a longer shadow, but it will be no wider.
