    in pectore = literally “within (an anatomical) chest.” BTW, someone doesn’t have to be a priest or archbishop to be named a cardinal. Charity causes me to refrain from taunting a certain archbishop who’s been passed over more than once for his red hat.

    “In pectore” is the terms for a secret Cardinal – a Cardinal whose status is known only to the Pope. Apparently there are such things, and JPII had four. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_pectore
