If we were in our yard (or the street abutting our yard) we could stay out after dark- if it was the weekend or school vacation). I remember watching the bats swoop in the area of the streetlight.
Our city charges extra for street lights. If it’s on your property, it’s on you. Lots of little concrete stumps in the neighborhood where there use to be a street light.
Your sad little childhoods will give you great stories. Like the time you lost your helmet and had to walk you bike all the way home. Or the time you stood less than ten feet from a lady finger firecracker.

Since I no longer have to come in, I use the street lights to tell if I should turn my headlights on.

we used to play in the dark. hide and seek, kick the can, we even slept out on the lawn.
