I got sent off to day camps, especially when I was too young to be left on my own. But it was always mom who handled it. The only person whose hair I was no longer disturbing was her.
The Boys Club had 3 sessions during the summer. My parents sent me to the first and 3rd sessions because they couldn’t send me to all 3. When I got a little older, they signed me up 3 times to be a counselor for the entire summer. They found it was cheaper to send me to camp than it was to feed me at home. And counselor didn’t have a fee. When I got a bit older, I worked on a moving truck during the summer and traveled the country with my brother-in-law or Uncles or unloaded boxcars when I was in town.

My father’s thoughts were, now that you don’t have school and homework to do, you have more time for chores.

I went to camp twice. Neither time ended well.

I was lucky and got to spend many summers on my grandparent’s farm.

We couldn’t afford camps. We had backyard and dirt.

I was sent to Knight’s Day Camp. It was hard to explain to people.

We lived right at the Gulf of Mexico, so my “summer camp” was trips to the beach, and that was fine with me.
