I’ve seen many places where jumping off a bridge was fun for kids and adults, but the water was deep enough to be safe. I’ve also seen the tragic results when the water was too shallow.

But Tommy declined and never saw Billy Joe MacAllister again.

Not sure young readers are understanding that “jumping off a bridge” is one of those potentially lethal things that parents use as an analogy:

“Everybody is going to the concert and get wasted.”

“If everybody was going to jump off a bridge, would you also do that?”

This was, of couse, all before the age of the Internet and before competitive stupidity became a meme.
