To me, nothing says “old” more than: Speak up, turn it up, I can’t hear that, ad nauseam. OTC hearing aids are cheap and make a huge difference in your (my) life.
My mother in law has terrible hearing and has her TV on at a painful volume. Then she wants to have a conversation and we can’t hear a thing. She refuses to get any sort of hearing aid. Why should she need to as she’ s in her own home, she says. I think the neighbours might disagree with that though!

It’s even worse when the ringing in your ears is in the wrong key.
