I’ve always felt ventriloquists were a little weird until I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know the late Paul Winchell. What a really nice, funny guy and a first-class person!
Something weird about ventriloquists and puppeteers. You can have the prop already. Or you can create the doll in front of the children. Socks, drawing on the hand, soft toy, wires/string, guiding poles… doesn’t matter what it is made of. Children understand that it is a toy that is being operated to act as if it is alive. Most children are more interested in How it is being made to move, talk, etc. But you do the same thing for adults… and they want to know more about the intelligence, soul, humor, story of the puppet. Children aim for the physical construction. While adults aim for the spiritual construction.
Today we think ventriloquism is a little strange. In the middle of the Twentieth Century there were ventriloquists so popular they had their own radio shows in the U.S. (Edgar Bergen) and in the U.K. (Peter Brough).
