If you can’t adopt, put a monthly donation to a local no kill shelter on you autopay list. It’s easier to find volunteers to dish out the dog food than it is to find the money to pay for it.

Quite some years ago we adopted a twice-returned dog, a Lab in a Border Collie suit (returned once because his big ol’ Lab tail swished something off a coffee table and the second time because the adopters had a baby and feared he was “too big” for the baby). He was very quiet during our initial meeting, and when we got in the car he lay in the back seat looking just crushed — head on his paws, big ol’ ears way down. They say dogs live in the moment, but I can’t believe that dog wasn’t reliving the past. Well, when he finally figured out that this time it was for real we got to see his great big smile and enjoy that big ol’ Lab tail just banging away like all get-out. He was the sweetest, smartest dog you could hope for.

Mighty tail thumping if you can hear it through a brick wall.

A good thing happened.
