I looked at the copyright date 1966, could Hart be talking about Charles DE Gaul?

Is this a reference to the fears of other countries “having the bomb” back in the sixties?

Like “hot potato”?

Does King Charles actually control U.K. nukes? Yikes, just thought of that guy pushing buttons scares me. He has fat fingers…..

Now the saying is “You ARE the bomb!”

Definitely unraveling a dark thread in recent arcs

In 1966, France—under the leadership of Charles de Gaulle—began testing in Polynesia toward developing a hydrogen bomb.

Hart was a subtle political commenter on both this strip AND Wizard of ID (worked with Parker). His strips many times carried an ironic statement about politics at the time it was drawn. Seeing the rerun strips is always a walk down memory lane for me.
