I have had 6 or 7 cats in my life. None of them were “adopted” or looked for (with one exception). They all just wandered into my life, looked around and said “this is my house now. You there! Human! Feed me! I live here now!”
It’s easy to collect cats. I have 3 in the house and feed some strays outside. 3 for now but I have had as many as 8 strays to feed. I’m surprised there are only 3 of them.
Which is how we foster won (I volunteer with a rescue and our director views fosters adopting as a win/win) my youngest. All three cats chose us in different ways, but they definitely chose us and I’m so happy they did.
I was thinking about a dog after I retired, but was in no hurry. That’s when a friend who breeds border collies asked me to “foster” a dog that had been sold to a family then brought back and needed a new home. “Only for a month or so until we can find a permanent home for her”.
That was nearly nine years ago. The dog and I are now inseparable.
That’s basically what happened with our cat, Cyrus. I went to pick up my kid from an overnight stay at a friend’s, and they walk up to the car holding a cat, a stray that looked pretty well cared for but was probably dumped.
Yes. The show up when they need a home, I do not look for them. Thankfully, it’s one at a time, with years between them, so one appears after its predecessor has crossed the rainbow bridge.
I have a mama and her half-grown litter in my back yard that need cannon rides to caring homes. Can’t bring them in since I have an older furbaby in delicate health that needs my attention.
I have a chunky kitty that lives by herself. But she has met other probably feral cats nearby. Either she is territorial and scaring them off (I hope) or just letting them know “this is my house, you can move in after I pass.”

I’ve heard of puffed rice and wheat shot out of a cannon. But not a puffed cat. Have a CAT-tastrophe free day everyone.
