They stopped giving away plastic bags here in Iceland decades ago. They sold them for 20 kronur (about 14 cents) each. When they started offering environmentally friendly bags for 30 kronur (21 cents), I bought one. I had walked to the store, and the bag didn’t make it back home in one piece. I swore I’d never use an other flimsy bag like that again, so I started collecting the old plastic bags. As long as they were still offering them, I bought a new plastic bag every time I went to the story. I ended up having two big trash bags full of plastic grocery bags by the time they stopped selling the plastic ones. After that I started reusing the ones that I had collected, and used each one until it was completely worn out. I’m almost out of plastic grocery bags now. I took a couple of old large bath towels to a place that does clothing alterations and asked them if they could make bags out of them for me. I’ll see the result later this week. There is no way I’m going to ever use those flimsy single-use “reusable” bags they have in the stores here.
If you don’t have plastic bags from the store to line your trash cans, then you have to buy some manufactured trash bag liner to use. Still have to use plastic bags for garbage. I don’t see a net benefit to not having store bags over buying others.
I reuse those large paper bags in my kitchen recycle bin so I don’t have to carry the entire thing out to the garage to the large recycle bin. Usually get them when daughter orders 5-Guys, lots of 5-Guys.
When Shop Rite opened a store near me I discovered that they didn’t provide any shopping hand baskets for quick shopping, so I bought a folding one from Amazon that works great for me. One of the cashiers just scans my items without needing them removed from my basket. It’s faster and more convenient than a bag. CleverMade™ if you’re interested.
Austin Texas banned plastic bags. Watched this one young lady take off her top to use as a bag. She pointed out as she walked by “Bikini top or bra….one has less lace. Enjoy the view y’all!”

I use a carry-on bag. It allows me to carry on at the register like a traveling toddler.

It’s impossible not to use any plastic, but it is also quite easy to reduce your plastic use rather significantly.
