Before the advent of “burst mode” cameras, I went on a whale watching trip. I had a nice SLR camera. A whale would breach, I would press the shutter, the mirror when swing out of the way, the iris would automatically adjust and the shutter would open and close for the picture. Days later, I would have a picture of the tip of a whale’s tale as it disappeared beneath the waves.
The whales here have a deal with tour company. If they don’t come out of the water and present themselves, it’s a breach of contract. Then again, since the tours are there to ignore the whales, it’s hard to know whether the whales have breached or not. [In fact, if the tour people noticed the whales hadn’t breached, then the tour company was in breach (because the were supposed to ignore the whales).]
